Continued from the Business Case for Equality and Diversity in the Workplace Summary of research findings Recent research findings give strong support to the business case for good practice in equality and diversity – check your Sector Skills Council to see what research has been produced in relation to your sector. The Leitch Report highlights the challenges in the UK workforce, changing demographics and changes in the make-up of the workforce, skills shortages and skills gaps in a fast developing global economy are challenges in all sectors. This is reflected across Europe. A report, “The Business Case for Diversity Good Practice in the Workplace “, produced for the European Commission [DG Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities] in Sept 2005 considered employers’ approaches to equality and diversity in the workplace. The research found that 42% of 919 respondents reported that the single key driver in their development of equality and diversity good practice was recruitment and retention of skilled staff in response to skills shortages in their labour market. Additionally, employers reported that it was important to their business to be seen as an “employer of choice”; not only attracting talent from the labour market but in opening up new markets as a result of their improved image. |
